With things like spinners usually the retrieve alone is enough to set the hook, but I tend to do the same little sweep just to make sure they are on. They have soft mouths and I use small hooks, so no need to crank on the rod. With soft baits they swallow it right away and there isn't a huge need to set the hook.
It's not a very hard jerk, just enough to take slack out of the line and make sure the hook tip is buried.
